World Cup Groups Guide

2026 World Cup groups: 12 groups of 4 teams, 3 matches per team, top 2 qualify plus 8 best third-place finishers. Group draw explained with match counts.

About this page

The 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage divides 48 qualified teams into 12 groups of 4, labeled Group A through Group L. Within each group, every team plays the other 3 teams once — a mini round-robin producing 6 matches per group and 72 group matches in total.

Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss. After all group matches are played, the top 2 from each group advance to the knockout bracket. The 8 best third-placed teams (ranked across all 12 groups by points, then tiebreakers) also qualify, filling the 32-team knockout draw.

The group draw is a carefully managed seeding process: FIFA places the highest-ranked teams in Pot 1 to spread them across groups, while confederation rules prevent too many teams from the same region sharing a group.

Frequently Asked Questions

+How many groups are in the 2026 World Cup?

12 groups (A through L), each containing 4 teams. This is an increase from the 8 groups used in the 2022 World Cup.

+How many matches does each team play in the group stage?

Each team plays exactly 3 group stage matches — one against each of the other 3 teams in their group.

+What does it mean to finish third in a World Cup group?

A third-place finish in any group means you did not automatically qualify for the knockout stage. However, the 8 best third-placed teams across all 12 groups are compared and the 8 with the best records advance.

+How are group stage tiebreakers resolved?

Points first, then goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head results between tied teams, and finally fair play records. If teams are still equal after all criteria, the draw of lots decides.
